Grifol signed a three-year contract with the White Sox ahead of the 2023 season. Usually, sports teams from Chicago do not disclose the specificity of the contract terms when they hire new personnel. However, it was reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today, that Grifol's contract was worth $3 million, bringing his annual salary to $1 million.

Pedro Grifol's time as White Sox manager

Grifol was hired as manager after Hall of Famer Tony La Russa left the team after leading them to successive playoff appearances in 2020-21 and an 81-81 record in 2022. Grifol came in as a fresh face in his first managerial stint, having previously spent 10 seasons in the Kansas City Royals setup in various coaching roles.

However, Grifol had issues from the start. The manager stumbled to a 61-101 record in 2023 as the White Sox finished last in the AL Central. They gave away strong arms such as Dylan Cease, Aaron Bummer and Gregory Santos. Dealing with a weakened team, the White Sox started the season with a 3-22 skid.

Then they recorded a 14-game losing streak in May and early June, which was the longest in franchise history, before that was eclipsed by the AL-record-tying 21-game losing streak after the All-Star break.

Grifol finished his time at Chicago with an 89-190 record. He has the worst record for any manager at a single club since Casey Stengel: 175-404 with the New York Mets from 1962 to 1965. The White Sox are headed for their sixth overall and first consecutive 100-loss season.

As per reports, the team will appoint a permanent replacement for Grifol in the winter. Former Cleveland Guardians outfielder and three-time All-Star Grady Sizemore was named interim manager.
