In an impressive display of efficiency and skill, Boston Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck threw a complete game shutout against the Cleveland Guardians, leading his team to a 2-0 victory. With a length of just one hour and 49 minutes, this was the fastest nine-inning game since June 2010, when Armando Galarraga nearly pitched a perfect game.

Not only was Houck’s performance on the mound noteworthy for the shutout, he also did it in less than 100 pitches—a feat called a "Maddux" after the legendary pitcher Greg Maddux. Houck only needed 94 pitches, 69 of which were strikes, to get the win. This marked the team’s first "Maddux" since Clay Buchholz threw one back in August 2014.

A balk by Cleveland Guardians’ starter Ben Lively in the third inning gave the Red Sox the lead, signifying one of the game’s key moments. This was followed by Connor Wong hitting a solo home run over the Green Monster in the fourth inning, expanding Boston’s lead.

Houck’s dominance was clear, as he allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out nine batters. His slider was especially good, leaving Guardians hitters struggling at the plate.

Tanner Houck had his first full-game shutout in his five-year MLB career.

Houck’s standout performance was his first full-game shutout in his five year Major League career. It also gave the Boston Red Sox a much-needed boost, as they have been struggling with injuries and losses this homestand. With this win, the Red Sox’s record improved to 10-9, making the American League East the only division where every team currently stands above .500.

Red Sox’s manager, Alex Cora, praised Houck’s calm approach to the game and control, noting that there was never any consideration of pulling him in favor of a reliever. This victory not only proves Houck’s potential as one of the team’s key pieces, but also sets a high standard for pitching in general this season as he currently stands on top of the MLB in ERA.
