Reds Roster: Breaking down Cincinnati's major league team

Chicago Cubs v Cincinnati Reds
How good is the Cincinnati Reds roster?

The Cincinnati Reds roster is not exactly one of the best in all of baseball. That honor would likely go to the New York Mets, the New York Yankees or the Houston Astros. Nevertheless, as is the case with most MLB teams, there is a lot of talent.

Whether that talent is going to be used for the Reds to flip for prospects or the centerpiece of a rebuild remains to be seen, but there is certainly talent. Here's what their roster looks like:

Catchers

  • Curt Casali
  • Luke Maile
  • Tyler Stephenson

Infielders

  • Noelvi Marte
  • Elly de la Cruz
  • Johnathan India
  • Alejo Lopez
  • Kevin Newman
  • Jose Barrerro
  • Spencer Steer
  • Joey Votto

Outfielders

  • Stuart Fairchild
  • Jake Fraley
  • TJ Friedl
  • Wil Myers
  • Nick Senzel
  • Mike Siani
  • Nick Solak

In terms of pitchers, here's how they stack up:

  • Tejay Antone
  • Graham Ashcraft
  • Luis Cessa
  • Fernando Cruz
  • Alexis Diaz
  • Justin Dunn
  • Buck Farmar
  • Ian Gibaut
  • Hunter Greene
  • Vladimir Gutierrez
  • Joel Kuhnel
  • Casey Legumina
  • Nick Lodolo
  • Connor Overton
  • Lyon Richardson
  • Reiver Sanmartin
  • Tony Santillan
  • Lucas Sims
  • Levi Stoudt
  • Luke Weaver
  • Brandon Williamson

There's plenty of talent on the Reds roster. They have Johnathan India, one of the brightest young infielders in the game. Joey Votto, even at his increasing age, is still a contributor and may very well be a Hall of Famer.

Expectations for Cincinnati Reds roster in 2023

Despite the presence of a few really good pieces, the Reds roster isn't picked to be a contender. Nevertheless, here's what the projections say. Fangraphs doesn't believe the Reds have enough to finish above .500.

In fact, they're expected to be the second-worst team in baseball with a record of 67-95. The only team worse is the Colorado Rockies.

Johnathan India is expected to put up 2.9 fWAR with a 110 wRC+ for another solid season. In one of his final seasons, Joey Votto is expected to record a 109 wRC+ with a 1.2 fWAR.

The Reds will likely be one of baseball's worst teams and some of their players may end up being traded to a contender for more prospects as they continue to rebuild.
