San Francisco Giants fans react to Brandon Crawford missing time in Spring Training with knee pain: "Age catching up" "Wheels are coming off"

The San Francisco Giants will be without shortstop Brandon Crawford for at least a week after the 36-year-old began experiencing pain in his left knee. Crawford, set to be the team's starting shortstop this season after the team famously had Carlos Correa pulled out from under them in the free-agent market, experienced a similar issue last season.

Crawford missed nearly a month of the regular season last year, and the team hopes that rest will give him time for the soreness and inflammation he is experiencing to subside before opening day on March 30 at Yankee Stadium.

San Fancisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler told MLB.com:

"We are just trying to get him ready for opening day. We don’t see a lot of value in trying to stick him out there at shortstop and pushing him really hard. We want him to be ready for New York. We’re just going to have that mindset of getting him as physical and comfortable as possible for opening day."

Giants fans are predictably quite concerned that Crawford will not be ready for opening day.

The San Francisco Giants are very slight at shortstop. Behind Crawford, who hit just .231 in 2022, San Francisco is looking at the possibility of Thairo Estrada, Brett Wisely and Isan Diaz, as players on their 40-man roster who could take over at shortstop if Crawford's knee issue lingers.

However, Giants fans are thinking more about the team's No. 4-ranked prospect Case Schmitt playing shortstop. Schmitt is a natural third baseman, but has played shortstop in the minors.

Kapler told MLB.com:

"I think we all believe that he can be a great third baseman at the major league level. He doesn’t have as many reps at shortstop, but I don’t see any reason why he can’t be a good shortstop, as well."

Neither do San Francisco Giants fans, apparently.

The San Francisco Giants reportedly agreed to a 13-year, $350 million contract with free agent shortstop Carlos Correa in January. However, after balking at Correa's physical, the New York Mets swooped in to sign him. However, New York also shied away from the medical report, and Correa ended up back with the Minnesota Twins.

It's hard to depend on a 36-year-old shortstop.

Besides Correa, there were a number of free-agent shortstops available to the San Francisco Giants this offseason.

Dansby Swanson went to the Chicago Cubs, Trea Turner went to the Philadelphia Phillies, along with Correa returning to the Twins. Xander Bogaerts left the Boston Red Sox for California, but went south to the San Diego Padres – who already had an All-Star shortstop, Fernando Tatis Jr., who is moving to the outfield upon his return.
