The Boston Red Sox had major questions with their pitching staff at the start of the offseason, which still remain unanswered. However, their simultaneous pursuit of Juan Soto made it unclear what they were prioritizing. Reports have cleared the air about who the AL East team will be targeting in free agency.
The Red Sox one of six teams that met with Juan Soto. They reportedly had a successful conversation with the star, who is expected to command offers in excess of $600 million. Soto is set to become the face of the organization he signs with.
However, insider Bob Nightengale has reported Boston will be looking to sign at least two out of three marquee starting pitchers available in the market. This includes the likes of Blake Snell, Max Fried and Corbin Burnes, all Cy Young caliber flamethrowers.
"They not only want to sign one of the marquee free-agent pitchers in Corbin Burnes, Max Fried and Blake Snell, but actually want to sign two. They are adamant on signing at least one lefty between Fried and Snell," NIghtengale wrote for USA Today.
Red Sox fans were not happy as the organization has announced its intention to buy certain players in the past but didn't go through with it in order to save payroll. Moreover, some fans also felt that prioritizing two top quality starting pitchers will hinder their chances to go all out for Soto.
"This is bad because it means no Soto. Don't overthink this!," a fan wrote.
"Preparing myself to get hurt again," another fan wrote.
"I’ll believe it when I see it," a fan wrote.
"I want to own a Lamborghini and a Porsche too but we all know that won't happen," a fan said sarcastically.
"NFW Boston gets 2 of 3. Certainly alot of other teams will crush that dream," a fan gave up.
"They’ll get none of them and instead sign someone coming off of Tommy John surgery who should be ready by mid season 2026," another fan wrote.
Red Sox also interested in signing Willy Adames
After a stretch of quiet offseasons, Boston is finally looking to splurge some cash. The Red Sox are not only looking to pursue the hottest outfieder and pitchers in the market but also are interested in signing one of the top infielders available in Willy Adames.
Per Nightengale, Boston has the option to move regular shortstop Rafael Devers to third base in order to make way for Adames in the shortstop position. The Brewers infielder hit 112 RBIs including 32 home runs at a .251 pace this year.
