The Houston Astros, one of the most dominant teams in Major League Baseball (MLB) in recent years, have had a remarkable opening day streak.
They have won their first game of the season every year since 2012, going 10-0 since losing 5-3 to the Colorado Rockets that year. However, their decade-long streak was broken on Thursday night, as they suffered a 3-2 defeat against the Chicago White Sox.
The loss meant they failed to go past the Boston Beaneaters' record of ten consecutive Opening Day wins (set between 1887-96), Nevertheless, the Astros' opening day record has become a point of pride for the team and its fans and reflects their overall success on the field in recent years. They're now 33-29 on the Opening Day following their loss to Chicago.
They're the defending champions and have won over 100 games in three of the last four seasons, making the American League Championship Series in four of the last five years. They also won the World Series in 2017 and were runners-up two years later.
Despite the loss, Houston remains a formidable team and is expected to compete at the highest level once again this year. Their lineup boasts some of the game's most talented hitters, including Jose Abreu, Jeremy Pena and Alex Bregman. Their pitching staff is also solid, with talents like Hector Neris and Framber Valdez leading the way.
Their game against White Sox was a tightly contested affair, with the two teams trading blows throughout the nine innings. However, it was Andrew Vaughn whose clutch hitting in the ninth innings secured the win for Chicago.
White Sox beat Astros on opening day to pick up first win of season
The Chicago White Sox started their 2023 MLB season with a win against the defending champions.
It's a great result for rookie manager Pedro Grifol, who was under considerable pressure. Pitcher Dylan Cease was the standout player in the game, and Astros hitters couldn't keep up with him.
