Umpire Pat Hoberg calls Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels for a pitch clock violation during the sixth inning against the Seattle Mariners

Shohei Ohtani is a Japanese baseball player who currently plays for the Los Angeles Angels in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is known for his exceptional skills as both a pitcher and a hitter, making him one of the most exciting and unique players in the league today. Ohtani has been on a roll in the early part of the 2023 season, setting numerous records and thrilling fans with his incredible performances on the mound and at the plate.

On Wednesday night, the Angels faced off against the Seattle Mariners in a game that would ultimately end in a 4-3 victory for the Angels. Ohtani played a key role in the win, both as a pitcher and a batter. However, he also made history in the game by becoming the first player to receive a pitch clock violation as both a pitcher and a batter.

The pitch clock is a new rule in MLB that has been implemented this year to speed up the pace of games. It requires pitchers to deliver a pitch within a certain amount of time, or else an automatic ball will be awarded to the batter. Similarly, batters must be ready to step into the batter's box and prepare to hit within a certain time frame, or else they will be called out.

During the game against the Mariners, Shohei Ohtani was pitching in the top of the first innings when he received his first pitch clock violation. He was taking too much time between pitches, and the umpire called the ball against him. Later in the game, when Ohtani was at bat, he again received a pitch clock violation. This time, he was taking too long to step into the batter's box and get ready to hit.

Shohei Ohtani helps the Angels to their fourth victory despite making unwanted history

Despite the pitch clock violations, Shohei Ohtani had a fantastic game against the Mariners. With his incredible skills on display, it's no wonder that Ohtani is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about players in MLB.

While receiving pitch clock violations is certainly not a positive achievement, it does arguably speak to the unique skills that Ohtani possesses as both a pitcher and a hitter. He is often asked to perform double duty for the Los Angeles Angels, pitching in games and then hitting in the lineup. This requires a great deal of mental and physical preparation, and it's perhaps not surprising that Ohtani may sometimes need a little extra time to get ready.
