In 1954, New York Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio tied the knot with Hollywood icon, Marilyn Monroe.

Before her marriage to DiMaggio, Marilyn expressed her desire to achieve the perfect balance between her career and home.

"I’m going to continue my career," Marilyn explained. "But I’m looking forward to being a housewife too."

However, things turned out differently once they were Mr. and Mrs. Monroe, as they filed for divorce in October 1954 nine months later, alleging solely "mental cruelty."

According to rumors, DiMaggio wanted Monroe to serve as his submissive housewife. Monroe's diva reputation, though, encouraged envy and triggered his domineering tendencies. Moreover, during their marriage, DiMaggio physically and emotionally abused Monroe.

Six years after her highly publicized divorce from Joe DiMaggio, Marilyn Monroe died from a suspected overdose on August 5, 1962, at the age of just 35. Next to her bed, several empty pill bottles were discovered.

The quantities of pills discovered in Monroe's body were several times the maximum permissible levels, ruling out the notion that she had unintentionally overdosed.

As Monroe had no family, the concerned authorities called up the late New York Yankees star, DiMaggio to report to the scene. As per reports, he intervened and organized her funeral.
