Former Cleveland Indians star Jason Kipnis has announced his retirement from professional baseball

After 10 seasons in the MLB, former Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis has announced his retirement from professional baseball. In an Instagram post, the two-time All-Star announced his frustration and gratitude for coming to the decision to walk away from baseball.

"I'd be lying if I say I wanted to write this. To have to officially acknowledge that my time as a player in the game of baseball is over," Kipnis told his fans and followers. "I always heard that you rarely get to end your career on your own terms. They weren't lying."

"My mind and body just aren't up for the commitment anymore," Jason Kipnis continued in his post. "Frustrating at first, but there's only one feeling I'm left with that stands out above all ... Gratitude."

His post showcased his frustration with the way his career ended, but also his appreciation for everyone who helped him reach this point in his life. The heartfelt gratitude may have been surprising for someone whose nickname during his career was "Dirtbag".

No, the nickname did not come from being a sketchy person, but from the effort that he played with throughout his career. Throughout his time in Cleveland, Jason Kipnis endeared himself to the city and his teammates, earning the name "Dirtbag" for his passionate play, which often resulted in his jersey being stained with dirt and mud.

"Im honor of Jason Kipnis retiring, lets take a trip down memory lane. The dirtbag had one hell of a highlight reel in Cleveland" - Barstool Cleveland

During his time with Cleveland, Kipnis was a beloved figure among fans who appreciated his hustle. In 2013 and 2015, Kipnis was named an All-Star with the club. However, toward the end of his career, Jason Kipnis began struggling with his health, playing more than 121 games once in his final four seasons.

A look at Jason Kipnis' MLB career

Though he was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 2008 MLB Draft, Kipnis opted to remain in college for the following season. After the 2008 season with Arizona State University, the second baseman was selected by the Cleveland Indians (Guardians) in the second round.

At 24 years old, Kipnis was called up to the MLB roster, quickly becoming a fan favorite. Throughout his first five seasons with Cleveland, Kipnis batted .272 with 53 home runs, 272 RBIs and 100 stolen bases. It was during that period that he earned his two All-Star selections.

As injuries started to take their toll on "Dirtbag", his production suffered as a result. In his final four seasons in the MLB, Kipnis hit .236 with 50 home runs and 191 RBIs. While his counting stats were still productive, his batting average plummeted.

"I've illustrated Jason Kipnis @TheJK_Kid more than a few times in the @ThePlainDealer. He gave 110% and Cleveland loved him back for it. Here are 2 pages we published, the right side being a 'Day' in his life, written by Dennis Manoloff @dmansworld474. Happy retirement, Dirtbag." - Chris Morris

He finished his career with 126 home runs, 545 RBIs and 136 stolen bases. He also maintained a .260 batting during his time with the Cleveland Indians (Guardians) and the Chicago Cubs. While he will not find himself inducted into the Hall of Fame, he was an entertaining and beloved second baseman during his prime.
