The New York Yankees announced their September call-ups for the 2024 season this past Sunday, but the name of Jasson Dominguez was surprisingly missing from the list. Nicknamed 'the Martian', the 21-year-old outfielder was left out of the Yankees roster even though he has been tearing up in the minor leagues since returning from an elbow injury earlier in the year.
Rated as the No. 1 prospect in the Yankees franchise, Jasson Dominguez made his MLB debut on September 1, 2023. He batted .258/.303/.677 with four home runs and seven RBIs in the eight games he played before requiring surgery on his right elbow.
Dominguez returned to action in May 2024, but he was sidelined again the following month with an oblique strain. Nevertheless, he has been red hot when healthy and has a .299/.357/.455 slashline with an .812 OPS and five home runs in Triple-A this season.
This past Tuesday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was a guest on the Talkin' Yanks podcast from Jomboy Media. On the show, Boone discussed the reasons why there isn't any playing time available for the Martian. (9:40)
"He has not played a ton this year," Boone said. "And that clear avenue is not there for him yet right now. So, he remains very much in the conversation [for a call-up] going back a couple of weeks and will remain in that conversation moving forward." (Starting at 10:35)
"Obviously, it's been kind of a disjointed year for him, with the Tommy John [surgery] and coming back from that," Boone continued. "Getting off to a pretty good start and then having the oblique injury that set him back a month. Coming back, he struggled a little bit out of the shoot from that."
"We do feel like, in a good way, that the last two to three weeks [Jasson Dominguez] are really starting to string together the quality of the at-bats. So, he's very much in the mix right now," he added. "And if something pops up, you feel really good about him being there who could slide in."
Therefore, Jasson Dominguez may have been left out of the Yanees roster for the moment, but he could get called up before the postseason begins.
Leaving out Jasson Dominguez is a major surprise
The decision to leave Jasson Dominguez has not boded well with the New York Yankees supporters, who harbor grand expectations from the outfielder. Moreover, it raises the question as to whether the organization is doing all in its power to win the World Series this year.
The Yankees have been struggling with inconsistent offensive production from outside their main sluggers, Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Giancarlo Stanton. Outfielder Alex Verdugo is batting .235/.293/.360 with 83 OPS+; therefore, Jasson Dominguez appears to be a good choice to come in as his replacement.
However, the Yankees front office is happy to keep the Martian in the minors for now, and it will be interesting to see if he indeed gets called up this year.
