Baseball fans outside of New York have likely never heard of Jhony Brito, but the young pitcher is in line to be an MLB starter.

Although he has never pitched in the majors, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone recently said Brito could be the club's fifth starter.

Jhony Brito has been with the organization since 2016 and has impressed over his last two seasons in the minors. The 25-year-old missed the bulk of the 2017 season and the entire 2018 season due to Tommy John surgery but has worked his way back. Since 2019, he has gradually developed into one of the team's top pitching prospects.

Yankees fans took to the Twitter comments section to debate whether the young Dominican will be able to cut it in the majors. Fans are spilt on whether a player who is yet to play a MLB game will be able to handle the pressure of pitching in the Bronx.

Jhony Brito can be utilized as a starter or out of the bullpen. He made 18 appearances and 15 starts for the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders last season. Over that stretch, he finished with a 6-2 record and a 3.31 ERA over 70.2 innings.

Pitcher Jhony Brito will likely start for the New York Yankees due to a long list of injuries to the rotation

The New York Yankees pitching staff has been decimated by injuries, forcing Boone to look for alternatives.

Luis Severino is the latest member of the rotation to hit the injured list with a lat strain. Carlos Rodon is out with a forearm strain. Frankie Montas will likely miss a chunk of the season after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder.

2022 All-Stars Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes are the only two of the projected five starters that are healthy for Opening Day. Domingo German and Clarke Schmidt will fill in as the third and fourth starters.

The Yankees' defense of their American League Division title is off to a rocky start. Fans are hoping that the injuries to Carlos Rodon and Luis Severino are not too serious. For now, the club will rely on young prospects to contribute some big innings over the early stages of the season.
