When is Julio Urias expected to return from injury? Dodgers pitcher's potential recovery timeline explored

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Julio Urias has been place on the 15-day IL

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the living embodiment of the expression "when it rains, its pours", as Julio Urias joins a growing list of players on the IL. The former World Series champion was placed on the 15-day IL with a left hamstring strain, which is expected to keep him sidelined for a minimum of two weeks.

The injury occurred following last Thursday's matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals, which saw Urias give up six earned runs through three innings. It's unclear exactly when the injury took place, or if it was the reason for his poor outing, however, it was yet another disappointing appearance by the 26-year-old.

While the team has not given a clear timeline for his return, the 15-day stint will keep him out of the rotation for a minimum of two weeks, with a minor league rehab assignment possible. If he were to require time in the minors to ramp activity, there is a possibility that Julio Urias could miss upwards of a month of action.

The news is not welcome for the Los Angeles Dodgers as the team's list of injured pitchers continues to grow. Joining Urias on the IL is Dustin May, who just days before, was diagnosed with a flexor pronator strain in his throwing elbow.

Dustin May's injury appears to be better than first expected as many fans and members within the organization were concerned about the possibility of Tommy John surgery. Given the fact that May had already undergone the surgery, such fears were justified.

A look at Julio Urias' rough 2023 season so far

Julio Urias has struggled for the majority of this season, posting a 5-4 record with a 4.39 ERA and 1.16 WHIP, while also recording 53 strikeouts. This has been a far cry from last season when Urias finished third in National League Cy Young voting after posting a 17-7 record with a 2.16 ERA and 166 strikeouts.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to call upon Wander Suero to replace Urias in the rotation. The club may also turn to either Gavin Stone or Michael Grove to fill the void left by Urias and May.
