When Steve Garvey dodged accountability for fathering two children with different women in the span of one year

Former San Diego Padres star Steve Garvey once came under fire when it was revealed that he had impregnated two of his ex-lovers in the same year.

In 1989, the news came out of Garvey impregnating two different women. UPI interviewed the woman, Rebecca Mendenhall, who was applying for a paternity suit against the San Diego Padres star.

Mendenhall, a former editor of Cable News, was Garvey's fiance from December 1988 to January 1989. However, the couple separated and according to Mendenhall, it was because Garvey said that marriage was not for him.

Mendenhall said:

"He said, 'I've had the last couple of weeks alone to think about it and marriage is not for me.''

Garvey had also impregnated another woman the same year, having a daughter named Ashley. He also married Candace Garvey in 1989, making the year quite eventful for him. A few days after his marriage, Mendenhall gave an interview alleging she would file a paternity lawsuit.

The San Diego Padres' former first baseman defended himself against the allegations made by Mendenhall. She claimed he knew about the pregnancy when they separated.

Gravey told NBC News the same year that he would be responsible for any of his children. However, he insisted that in both cases, he was kept in the dark about the chance of pregnancy.

"I'll live up to the moral obligations which I feel strongly about because I am a Christian. In both cases, I was led to believe I wasn't responsible for birth control."

Steve Garvey married Cyndy Garvey in 1971 and separated from her in 1983. The San Diego Padres star has a total of eight children to this date.

Steve Garvey was getting a lot of heat from the media because he got two different women pregnant in the same year. However, amongst the ridicule, he had the support of his current wife, Candace.

In the same interview with NBC, Garvey said that his wife was happy to adopt any children he might have had with other women and that she was happy with the marriage.

"I'm glad I married you -- I got you off the streets."

The couple married in 1989 and have been together ever since. They live in Los Angeles and Palm Desert, California.
