Connor McCaffery's dad, Fran McCaffery, had his contract terminated following the end of last season with the Hawkeyes. Iowa finished 17-16 — one of its worst records under McCaffery — and missed back-to-back NCAA tournaments, leading the university to look in a different direction.
Months after McCaffery's firing, his son, Connor, cut ties with the university in a cryptic, since-deleted, post on X (formerly Twitter). On Saturday, Barstool Sports posted a screenshot of the deleted post from @connor_m30 that reads:
"Idk why people still yell 'Go Hawks' when they see me 🤣 like .... No? Go dawgs🐶Go Quakers❗Go Fever🙏🏼."
Connor McCaffery played six seasons at Iowa under his father, Fran, before venturing into coaching. He worked for the Indiana Pacers in the NBA as a scout member before taking an assistant coaching job with Butler.
Fran spent 15 years with Iowa, leading the program to seven March Madness appearances. However, the Hawkeyes never advanced past the second round. His son, unhappy with the program's decision, made his feelings known in the now-deleted post.
McCaffery's ties to the Hawkeyes also stem from his girlfriend, Caitlin Clark, who's widely regarded as the best player to don an Iowa jersey.
Connor McCaffery says his father, Fran, is super excited to join Penn Quakers
After Fran McCaffery parted ways with the Iowa Hawkeyes, the University of Pennsylvania came calling, and he couldn't be happier to join his alma mater.
A little over a week after Iowa fired Fran, he landed the coaching job at Penn, where he once played and also began his coaching career as an assistant back in 1982-83.
Connor McCaffery spoke with The Daily Pennsylvanian — a student newspaper at Penn — about his father's new job.
"You could see in the press conference how much it means to him (Fran)," Connor said. Obviously, he was incredibly emotional, and we still hear stories. Siblings and I joke about it. My mom — we joke about it.
"He remembers everything that happened in this building. The Cathedral of College Basketball — there’s no better feeling from me seeing him to be able to do that."
McCaffery, who's with the Butler Bulldogs, denied being part of the Penn coaching staff but didn't rule out the possibility in the future.
