The University of Iowa athletics department is home to the men's basketball team, the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes have participated in 29 NCAA tournaments, eight times in the National Invitation Tournament, eight conference titles during the regular season, and three Big Ten tournament titles.
Iowa has made three appearances in the Final Four; they advanced to the semifinals in both 1955 and 1980 and faced the University of San Francisco in the 1956 championship game. The Hawkeyes defeated in-state rival Northern Iowa in 2006 after setting a school record with 21 straight victories at home.
With a program revival under Lute Olson and the tenures of George Raveling and Tom Davis, Iowa basketball enjoyed widespread success in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The Hawkeyes advanced to the 1980 Final Four and captured their final Big Ten regular season title under Olson's coaching.
The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame has honoured Sam Barry, Ralph Miller, and Lute Olson as head coaches of Iowa. George Raveling, another head coach of the Hawkeyes, is recognized as a contributor to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
