Iowa has made three appearances in the Final Four; they advanced to the semifinals in both 1955 and 1980 and faced the University of San Francisco in the 1956 championship game. The Hawkeyes defeated in-state rival Northern Iowa in 2006 after setting a school record with 21 straight victories at home.

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame has honoured Sam Barry, Ralph Miller, and Lute Olson as head coaches of Iowa. George Raveling, another head coach of the Hawkeyes, is recognized as a contributor in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
