T. J. Otzelberger, born on September 17, 1977, is an American collegiate basketball coach who is considered as one of the rising stars in the coaching ranks after years of successful assistant coaching spells under different head coaches. He serves as the head coach at the University of Iowa. He was the head coach of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits from 2016 to 2019 and UNLV from 2019 to 2021 before taking the Iowa position in 2021.

Otzelberger is one of the four finalists for the Naismith Men’s Coach of the Year award. Since taking his role as the Cyclones head coach in 2021, Otzelberger has led the program to the NCAA tournament thrice.

T. J. Otzelberger’s Contract History

From 2001 to 2004, T. J. Otzelberger served as the basketball coach for Burlington Catholic Central High School, and from 2004 to 2005, he became an assistant coach at Chipola College. He was hired as Iowa State’s assistant coach in 2006, a position he kept until 2016 under three head coaches.

Otzelberger also served as assistant coach at Washington between 2013 and 2015 before returning to Iowa State in the same year. He got his first head coaching role at South Dakota State in 2016 and led the Jackrabbits to two Summit League tournaments and two NCAA tournament appearances.

He stayed with them until 2019 before committing to UNLV for the next two seasons. He returned to Iowa State in 2021 to serve as the head coach for the Cyclones.
