In 2021, while he was still the coach of Jackson State, Sanders had to have eight surgeries on his left foot in less than a month. He had two toes on the same foot amputated due to issues with blood clots.

On Wednesday, Sanders thanked his doctors from that period for saving his left foot from amputation in an Instagram post.

"Thank u thank u THANK U to @uchealth and the entire medical team and staff for keeping me in my PRIME. Without yall all this ain’t possible. I am truly BLESSED for all that y’all do for me. Running out the first game last season was the goal I had for myself after my surgeries, and YOU ALL help make that DREAM a REALITY. This year I’m HIGHSTEPPING! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾#CoachPrime," Deion Sanders wrote.

The charismatic Deion Sanders told Andscape that blood clots run in the family, and two of his uncles and his mother suffered from the same condition. Sanders mentioned that one uncle even died from it. He had a recurrence of the issue in the middle of last year

In an interview with USA Today, Sanders described the ordeal that he underwent when his health issues were at their worst and the severity of it that almost led to his leg being amputated.

"Man, forget the toes. They were charcoal black. They were dead. You look down there and it's two black toes. Take 'em. What am I going to do with them?" Deion Sanders said.
“I was so heavily medicated, I didn’t remember half the stuff the doctors did, so when I first looked down, it was humbling, because I’ll never run like that again. I don’t know if I’m going to wear shorts again. All these things cross your mind. All these things I have accomplished are on the back burner. I’m thinking about am I going to walk again. Am I going to walk correctly? Will I be able to jog? Shoot, am I going to live?" Sanders said.

Since missing the Pac-12 Media Days at the beginning of last season, Deion Sanders has not had any major episodes of the recurring health issues that he has been suffering from for the past three years.
