3 Masterstrokes from England in their win against Australia
#2 Persisting with Liam Plunkett despite being expensive
Liam Plunkett has been a handy all-rounder for England both with the bat and the ball. Every now and then, he chips in with wickets in the middle overs and later stages of an innings. In the first ODI, he was introduced into the attack in the 29th over of the Australian innings.
His initial 4 overs didn’t go well, as the pair of Glenn Maxwell and Ashton Agar struck 26 runs in his 4 overs. This took away the pressure from Australia and the pair of Maxwell and Agar were getting back into their groove.
But Captain Eoin Morgan persisted with Plunkett and this proved to be a masterstroke as he picked up the priced wicket of Glenn Maxwell that further dented the hopes of Australia putting up a sizeable total.
A well set Maxwell batting on 62 flicked one from his legs to the fielder at deep square leg. This was a big wicket considering the ominous form Glenn Maxwell was in.
Plunkett was brought back in the later stages of the innings and he removed the likes of Michael Neser and Andrew Tye, which ensured Australia didn’t play their full quota of 50 overs.
