Rohit Sharma recently broke Chris Gayle's record for the most sixes in international cricket

Rohit Sharma smashed five sixes during his 31st ODI and seventh World Cup century against Afghanistan in Delhi on October 11. His 131-run knock from just 84 balls not only included five maximums but also consisted of 16 boundaries.

Rohit is renowned for being a frequent six-hitter across formats. During his record-breaking knock against the Afghans, the Mumbai batter broke the record for the most sixes in international cricket.

Rohit Sharma has now struck 556 sixes in his career, going past legendary West Indian batter Chris Gayle.

With that being said, let's take a look at the five players who have hit the most number of sixes in international cricket.

#5 Martin Guptill - 383 sixes

One of the best white ball openers in the last decade, Martin Guptill knew a thing or two about clearing the rope. The recently retired New Zealand batter hit 383 sixes in 402 innings across all formats of international cricket.

During his career spanning 13 years, Guptill scored 13,463 runs for the Kiwis, including 23 centuries. His most memorable knock was an unbeaten 237 against the West Indies in the 2015 World Cup, which remains the highest score in the history of the tournament.

#4 Brendon McCullum - 398 sixes

Although the Kiwis are not associated with being power hitters in cricket, Brendon McCullum joins fellow New Zealander Guptill on this list. The cricketer-turned-coach hit 398 sixes in 474 innings during an accomplished career.

One of the finest wielders of the wooden willow, the wicketkeeper-batter is a modern-day great in limited-overs cricket. McCullum fell just short of hitting the 15,000-run milestone across all formats for New Zealand. His resume includes a triple century in Test cricket against India in 2014.

#3 Shahid Afridi - 476 sixes

Shahid Afridi was one of the pioneers of big hitting. Nicknamed "Boom Boom" due to his explosive batting style, Afridi hit 476 maximums in 508 innings during a career that started in 1996 and ended in 2018.

The Pakistani all-rounder was often criticized for his gung-ho approach, but he was very hard to stop once he got going. The 46-year-old has a strike rate of 114.14 across all formats of international cricket, which further proves his ability to clear the fences almost at will.

#2 Chris Gayle - 553 sixes

The first cricketer to cross 500 sixes in international cricket, Chris Gayle, ended up smashing 53 more maximums before calling it a day in his career. The left-handed opener was synonymous with hitting huge sixes, and he held the record for most sixes in international cricket for four and a half years, until Rohit Sharma overtook him.

The West Indian batter scored 19,593 runs across all formats in international cricket. He scored 42 centuries in total, which included a World Cup double century and a 333 in a Test match against Sri Lanka in 2010.

#1 Rohit Sharma - 556 sixes

Rohit Sharma overtook Gayle's 553 sixes against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup. He has smashed 556 maximums in just 473 innings, which is 78 innings less than the West Indian opener took to hit 553 sixes.

The Indian skipper has a few years of international cricket left in him and could easily cross 600 career sixes in international cricket. Rohit is an all-time ODI great and continues to perform at a high level across formats for his country.
