Team India bagged a humungous win against Australia in the opening Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 to kick off the five-match series in style. The Indian batters and bowlers were equally brilliant throughout the four days of the game as Australia lost only their fourth home Test series opener in the 21st century.
Clinching a win with four sessions to spare, on Day 4 of the Test, the Indian team and players achieved some unique feats, with one being Kohli’s 100th century across all forms of cricket.
On that note, let’s look at the five records made by India in their win against Australia in the first Test of BGT 2024-25.
1. Biggest victory by margin of runs in Australia and second biggest victory against Australia
Team India registered their biggest victory in Australia and their second biggest victory against the Aussies (both by margin of runs). After setting a target of 534 runs for the hosts to chase, Indian bowlers restricted their opponents to 238 in the final innings.
India took a massive lead of 533 runs courtesy of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 161-run knock and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten ton. Before today, India’s biggest win by runs, in Australia, came in Melbourne in 1977 when the then-Bishan Singh Bedi-led team grabbed a 222-run win.
This was also India’s second biggest victory against Australia after their win in Mohali in the 2008 Test, where they defeated the mighty Australians by 320 runs.
2. Second biggest victory by margin of runs outside Asia and India's third-biggest away Test win of all time
The win against Australia also marked India's second biggest victory, by margin of runs, outside Asia and their third biggest Test win of all time, away from home. While India has been a dominant side on Asian soil, this was a unique feat to achieve outside Asia.
India's biggest victory by margin of runs outside Asia came against the West Indies when the then-Virat Kohli-led side defeated the Caribbean team by 318 runs in North Sound. This win from 2019 is, to date, India's biggest win (by runs) outside India.
This win at the Optus Stadium in Perth was also India's third-biggest win of all time in an away Test match. India defeated Sri Lanka by 304 runs in Galle in 2017 and then beat the Windies by 318 runs in 2019, recording their two biggest wins of all time away from home.
3. Best bowling figures by an Indian captain on Australian soil in the 21st century
Jasprit Bumrah, who led the Indian team in the opening Test in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, registered the best bowling figures by an Indian captain in the 21st century on Aussie soil. He registered 8/72 including a five-wicket haul.
Speaking of the best match returns by an India captain in Tests, Bumrah ranks fourth in the list after Kapil Dev's 10/135 against West Indies (1983) and Bishan Singh Bedi's 10/194 (vs Australia in 1977) and 9/70 (vs New Zealand in 1976).
4. India first team to beat Australia at Optus Stadium in Perth
Australia have played only five Test matches at the Optus Stadium in Perth including the recently concluded opening match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Having won the previous three matches at this venue, the loss against India was the first for Australia on this surface.
The first Test that Australia played at this venue input was the one against India during the 2018 Border Gavaskar Trophy. Interestingly, Virat Kohli was a centurion in that game as well but India unfortunately ended up on the losing side.
Australia then went on to defeat New Zealand, West Indies, and Pakistan to register for consecutive wins at the venue. Hence with the 295-run loss against India, this is the first loss for the hosts, of the five that they've played here in Perth.
5. Kohli surpassed Sachin to become the Indian batter with most Test centuries against Australia Down Under
Virat Kohli notched up his 30th Test century, and in the process surpassed Sachin Tendulkar as the Indian batter with the highest number of Test centuries against Australia in Australia.
While this was the seventh for Virat in that sort, Tendulkar finished with six centuries to his name against Australia on Australian soil.
Additionally, Kohli also set a new record for most centuries (overall) scored by a visiting batter in Australia, taking his tally to 10. This was also Kohli’s 100th century across all forms of cricket, domestic, international, and leagues.
