England v India: 1st npower Test - Day One
Alastair Cook played a wonderful knock

The 2011 Test series in England was supposed to be a keenly contested encounter between the number 1 and number 2 ranked teams in the ICC Rankings. However, for India, it proved to be a nightmare and the nadir was reached in the 3rd Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

After England put them in to bat first, the Indian batsmen could not do much on a relatively benign pitch and were all out for 224. However, their true ordeal began when England started batting and the 186 run opening partnership of openers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook indicated that a leather hunt was in store.

The bowling attack of Ishant Sharma, Sreesanth, Praveen Kumar and Amit Mishra were totally ineffective as Alastair Cook played a marathon innings to bat India out of the game. He made 294 in 12 hours and 53 minutes, while Kevin Pietersen hit a 78 ball 63 and number 5 Eoin Morgan helped himself to a century as well.

India were finally put out of their misery when Strauss declared following Cook's dismissal for 294. England had made 710 for 7 and when they walked off, number 8 Tim Bresnan was batting at 53. India were shot out for 244 and went down 3-0 in the series as England romped home by an innings and 242 runs.
