Anurag Thakur has been elected unopposed as the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India after former President Shashank Manohar resigned from the post. Thakur was all set to be elected for the president’s post after Manohar stepped down to become the first independent chairman of the International Cricket Council.

The BCCI posted the announcement on their official Twitter handle,

Thakur also became the second-youngest president of the Board at the age of 41. The youngest ever BCCI president was Fateh Singh Gaekwad, who was elected for the post back in 1963 at the age of 33.

The BJP MP resigned as the secretary of the Board to get nominated as a presidential candidate. He got the signatures of all the six east zone units in his nomination form and completed all the formalities in the presence of CAB president Sourav Ganguly.

The man from Himachal Pradesh takes over the reins of the most powerful cricket Board of the world in rather tough times. The Board is currently facing the heat from the honourable Supreme Court to implement the Justice RM Lodha Committee’s recommendations for extensive reforms.

Thakur also played first-class cricket but is not the first BCCI president to do so. Raj Singh Dungarpur also played first-class cricket and held the post in 1998-99. Dungarpur played 86 first-class matches for Rajasthan and Madhya Bharat and picked up more than 200 wickets as a right-arm medium pacer.

Thakur has represented Himachal Pradesh in a single Ranji Trophy match during the 2000-01 season, where he picked up two wickets with his right arm off-break bowling.

The 41-year-old is also the third person to be backed by the East Zone to be elected for the Board’s top post in last one year. First, Jagmohan Dalmiya was elected as the president after Srinivasan’s exit. Dalmiya passed away last October after which Manohar took over the responsibility.

Maharashtra Cricket Association president Ajay Shirke was nominated as the new secretary of BCCI after the post was vacated by Thakur. The BCCI posted the announcement on their official Twitter handle as well.
