Australia vs England 2018, 2nd ODI - Hits and misses

Australia v England - Game 2

England faced no trouble to reach their target of 271 with 34 balls remaining, as they beat Australia by 4 wickets in the second ODI of the five-match series at Brisbane on Friday.

Interestingly, it was England's first ODI win at the Gabba since 1999.

The touring party, who defeated the hosts by 5 wickets in the first ODI, now go 2-0 up in the series.

As far as Australia are concerned, they have now lost eight of their past nine ODI games and the inability to defend totals is becoming a serious headache for the hosts.

The third ODI, which is now a must-win for Australia to remain alive in the series, will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday, January 21.

Let us now have a look at the performances those were hits and misses in the second ODI.

Miss: Andrew Tye

Australia v England - Game 1

Although Australia's entire bowling unit except for Mitchell Starc, who took fours wickets in his 10 overs, was an utter disappointment in Brisbane, Andrew Tye's lacklustre performance stood out.

For the second game in a row, Tye remained wicketless and gave away 47 runs in his 9 overs.

The Perth Scorchers pacer, who made his ODI debut with the first ODI at the MCG on Sunday, was completely ineffective in the previous game as well and he gave away 43 runs in 10 overs without claiming even a single wicket.

Hit: Jonny Bairstow

Australia v England - Game 2

Needing 271 to win in Brisbane, England got off to a bad start with the centurion of the first ODI, Jason Roy was dismissed in the first over for 2 by Mitchell Starc.

His fellow opener Jonny Bairstow, who scored 60 off 56, then stepped up and stitched a 117-run partnership with Alex Hales (57) to consolidate England's position.

Both Hales and Bairstow smashed Australian bowlers for boundaries and went on to complete their half-centuries.

The platform set by Bairstow and Hales proved vital for England as Joe Root and Chris Woakes led the tourists to a comprehensive 4-wicket win with 34 balls remaining.

Hit: Joe Root

Australia v England - Game 2

Australia opted to bat in Brisbane and were looking set to score 300 when part-time off-spinner Joe Root played an unlikely part to reduce the hosts to 161/3 after 30 overs.

Root trapped Steven Smith in front of the wickets for 18 before having Travis Head caught and bowled in a tidy spell.

Then, he played another beautiful innings and remained unbeaten on 46 as England chased down their target of 271 with 34 balls remaining.

In Melbourne, Root remained unbeaten on 91 off 110 balls as the visitors trounced the high-flying hosts in the first ODI.

The 27-year-old hit a well-paced half-century and held on to one end as Jason Roy was tormenting the Aussie bowlers with his power-hitting.

Miss: Steven Smith

Australia v England - Game 2

Australian captain Steven Smith, who was almost untouchable in the Test series, failed to replicate his success as the format shifted to limited overs.

The ICC Test Cricketer of the Year 2017, scored just 18 runs before being undone by Joe Root as the hosts suffered a mini batting collapse.

When Smith opted to bat first, Australia were looking set to score 300 but they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and could manage just 270 in 50 overs.

The 28-year-old contributed with just 23 runs in the series opener at Melbourne as Australia failed to defend 304.

Hit: Aaron Finch

Australia v England - Game 2

Aaron Finch brought up back-to-back tons as he scored 106 off 114 balls in the second ODI at Gabba on Friday.

Finch, who scored his third hundred in his last six 50-over games, also became the sixth Australian player to ever score 10 ODI centuries.

The 31-year-old's ton was also his fifth against England in just his 18th innings.

No other Australian batsman could even get a fifty as Finch fought a lone battle to take the hosts to a competitive score of 270/9 in 50 overs.
