Dinesh Karthik rose to instant fame after a fabulous unbeaten 8-ball 29 in the Nidahas Trophy final against Bangladesh that India won off the last ball. He had single-handedly shattered Bangladeshi hopes and became a household discussion.

The IPL was just a couple of weeks away and he was named the captain of the famous and successful franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders. There, he acquired the role of a finisher and led his side to the playoffs. These efforts of his have surely kept him in the T20 contention.

Post his final heroics, Karthik hasn't been able to let his bat do the talking. In the recently concluded three-match T20I series against the West Indies, he scored an unbeaten 31 in the first outing, not getting a chance to bat once and staying unbeaten on 0 once.

However, with the rapid rise of Pant at the highest level, Karthik's stocks have taken a hit and has become the second choice wicket-keeper of the side. Incidentally, he is the only one of the two surviving members at present from India's debut T20 back in 2007, MS Dhoni being the other.

The squad for the first T20I against Australia has been declared and he makes it to the side, but not as a wicket-keeper. This clearly indicates the long-term investment and planning that the team management is putting to effect.
