Bails off in a flash - The 5 best stumpings in ODI cricket

A wicket-keeper’s job is supposed to be among the toughest on a cricket field. Crouching and getting up for each ball can be an arduous task and can take its toll on the fittest of cricketers. However, some ‘keepers enjoy the role, and that is precisely what keeps them going behind the sticks. A stumping is often a crucial method of dismissing a batsman. An alert wicket-keeper when standing up to a fast bowler, can ensure the batsman doesn’t gain an unfair advantage by stepping out of his crease. Here is a look at 5 of the best stumpings that ODI cricket has seen.

1. MS Dhoni v Mitchell Marsh, Melbourne, 2012

Rahul Sharma bowled a flat leg-break, which beat Marsh, as he went for the big cut shot. Marsh momentarily dragged his back foot outside the crease, and that moment was enough for Dhoni to latch on to. Dhoni whipped the bails off in a flash and Marsh was caught short of his ground.

2. Kumar Sangakkara v Jimmy Maher, Brisbane, 2003

A big off-break from Muttiah Muralitharan ensured that Maher was well and truly beaten as he stepped out to try and get to the pitch. But, this is when the brilliance of Sangakkara comes in. He put in a big dive to gather the ball one handed, shifted the ball to his other hand, and threw down the stumps, all in one motion. It was a brilliant display of agility and awareness.

3. Brendon McCullum v Ricky Ponting, Nagpur, 2011

Tim Southee bowled a wide down the leg side, and McCullum in a fantastic smooth movement, went down to gather the ball and whip the bails off in one motion. The take itself was a great one, and to top it off with the stumping was a truly special effort from the Kiwi.

4. Dinesh Karthik v Michael Vaughan, Lord’s, 2004

On Debut. Pressure situation. At Lord’s. The ideal time for a young ‘keeper to show off his prowess. That is exactly what Dinesh Karthik did. As Michael Vaughan stepped out to a Harbhajan Singh delivery that turned way down the leg side, Karthik moved swiftly to gather the ball. What followed might be termed as the exuberance of youth, but was sensational nonetheless. From about seven or eight feet down the leg side, Karthik put in a massive dive to break the stumps, and found Vaughan short of the crease.

5. Kumar Sangakkara v Brian Lara, Guyana, 2007

As Lara went for the big drive against Chaminda Vaas, he was well and truly beaten, and dragged his foot out for a split second. That split second was enough for Sangakkara as he gathered the ball and stumped Lara, catching his foot in the air. Much similar to the Dhoni stumping of Mitchell Marsh.
