Over the past twelve months, Mayank Agarwal has established himself as a vital cog in the Indian Test wheel. Called up as a replacement for the Boxing Day Test in 2018, the right-hander has left his imprint on the international stage, with his most prolific run coming during India’s recently concluded home Test season.

The lad from Karnataka scored tons of runs against the likes of Bangladesh and South Africa and in the process, became one of the leading run-getters in the longest format in 2019.

On Saturday, Mayank disclosed an advice that he had received from Virat Kohli during that period, wherein the Indian skipper had motivated him to convert his hundreds into bigger scores. He recalled,

Against South Africa when I got a 150, Virat [Kohli] was there at the other end and he said 'Nothing short of a 200 will do. You’re batting well, make sure to not just score for yourself but for your team. The team needs to get a bigger score and it’s important for you to be there to help us get that score at a faster pace'.

The opening batsman is now gearing up for his latest Test assignment, when India clash swords with New Zealand in a two-match series, which begins on the 21st of February 2020 at Wellington.
