England vs India 2014 - 2nd Test, Day 5: Facts and figures

Ishant Sharma (not in picture) bouncer on the last ball of the first session removed Moeen Ali

India started the day with high hopes of winning the Test match and go 1-0 up in the five-match series with three to play. After Sourav Ganguly rang the Lord’s bell, the overnight pair of Moeen Ali and Joe Root stood firm and denied the visitors a breakthrough despite being scratchy. Slowly and steadily the pair was accumulating runs and added 68 in the morning when Ishant Sharma produced a moment of magic to remove Moeen Ali that lifted the hopes of the Indian side.

India persisted with the short ball strategy but it seemed to be ineffective as England found it comfortable to score runs. And it began with Matt Prior finding deep mid-wicket off a short pitch delivery. Thereafter, it was Ishant Sharma’s day without doubt as he became the second bowler after Bhuvneshwar Kumar to get into Lord’s honour boards in this match.

Ishant went on to stake claim for many prestigious records. Here are the highlights of the final day from Lord’s in numbers:

  • 0 – Overs bowled by Stuart Binny out of 89 overs bowled by India in the fourth innings.
  • 1 – First five-wicket haul for Ishant Sharma in the 4th innings of a Test and 6th overall (5 in away Tests). His previous fourth innings best was 4 for 53 against West Indies at Bridgetown, 2011. This is also his third five-for in his last 4 Tests.
  • 2 – This is also the first time two Indians have taken 6 or more wickets in an innings of the same Test: Bhuvneshwar 6 for 82 and Ishant 7 for 74.
  • 4 – Fourth consecutive duck for Ben Stokes for England after his innings today (3 in this series + 1 in a T20 vs West Indies).
  • 5 – Number of wickets Ishant captured with short deliveries.
  • 7 – Ishant Sharma became the first Indian bowler to pick up 7 wickets in an innings in England.
  • 7 – The 101-run partnership involving Ali and Root was only the seventh century stand for the 5th wicket for England. It was the fourth time it has come at Lord’s and it is also the first 100+ stand of the match. The 3rd fourth innings century stand for any wicket for England in last three years.
  • 13 – The difference between Ishant Sharma’s career bowling average (37) and his 4th innings average (24) after Stuart Broad’s wicket. Including that dismissal, he now has 28 wickets from 15 innings.
  • 14 – Ishant became the 14th Indian bowler to bag a five-for at Lord’s and the first to scalp 7 wickets in an innings at the ‘Home of cricket.’ Also, he is the first away bowler since Glenn McGrath to pocket 7 or more wickets here. This is also the first instance of a seven wicket haul from an Indian in away Test since Harbhajan Singh’s 7-120 against South Africa at Capetown, 2011. Only Erapalli Prasanna, Kapil Dev(2) and Anil Kumble have more wickets than Ishant in an away innings.
  • 50 – Joe Root’s fifty was the first since Kevin Pietersen’s half century in 2005 against Australia for an England No.5 at Lord’s.
  • 100 – This is Ishant Sharma’s 100th innings as a bowler.
  • 1986 – Last time India won a Test match at Lord’s. This is also India’s first away win since win over West Indies at Kingston, 2011 – 15 Tests before.
  • 2002 – Last time both the Indian openers bowled in an away Test. Incidentally, India won the match played at Leeds by an innings and 46 runs against England in which Virender Sehwag and Sanjay Bangar rolled their arms over.
