England vs India 2018: 3 players whose red-ball career hangs in the balance ahead of the first Test

Jennings scored a century in his debut Test match against India

Jennings made his Test debut against the same opponent that he is going to face tomorrow. He became the 101st player to score a century on Test debut. His poor returns in the subsequent series forced the selectors to drop him for good measure. His former opening partner at Durham, Mark Stoneman was his replacement.

If the no.4 spot is a big headache for India in the limited overs format, then the opening partner for Cook in the longer format is a massive headache for the English Test team. Ever since the retirement of Andrew Strauss, more than ten different players have participated in this musical chair competition. None have thus far emerged as the winner.

Stoneman’s failure paved the way for Jennings to return to the Test arena. Rory Burns, who captained the England Lions against India A, a few days ago, scored his third Championship century for Surrey in the current round of matches. With Burns knocking the door for selection, Jennings is under immense pressure to perform well in the opening game.
