ICC Awards 2013: MS Dhoni wins People's Choice Award; also nominated for Player of the Year honour

MS Dhoni: LG People’s Choice Award winner

The ICC, on Tuesday, announced nominees for the 2013 ICC Awards.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the only Indian nominated in the Player of the Year category. Other players to have made the shortlist for the biggest prize in the award ceremony are Hashim Amla, James Anderson, Michael Clarke, Alastair Cook and Kumar Sangakkara.

Shikhar Dhawan and Ravindra Jadeja join Dhoni on the list of nominees for ODI Cricketer of the Year.

Two Indians – spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and batsman Cheteshwar Pujara – have made the shortlist for Test Cricketer of the Year.

MS Dhoni won the LG People Choice’s Award, which included an online vote on social media website Twitter. The 32-year-old released a statement following the announcement. The statement read:

“This is one of the awards that has given me tremendous satisfaction, since it comes from the key stakeholders of the game – the fans. Recognition from the people who support and encourage us day in and day out only inspires me to put in that much more, and go the extra mile for them. I would like to thank all those people who have voted in my favour,”

Indian batsman Virat Kohli will feel hard done having not made the cut in the ODI Team of the Year after a prolific year with the bat in the 50-overs format of the game.
