Darren Sammy’s finishing skills offer a stern test for the England bowlers

In what should be a fascinating battle between two teams who have previously lifted the ICC World T20, England and West Indies collide at the high-scoring Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The major contest which could very well determine the outcome will be the face-off between an inexperienced English seam attack and the hard-hitting West Indies batsmen.

After a disappointing warm-up against hosts India, West Indies rebounded quickly with a last-gasp victory over the Australians. Darren Sammy led the way with a 28-ball 50 and he was ably supported by Carlos Brathwaite and Andre Rusell. Trevor Bayliss, the England Coach, would have looked at the sterling comeback from the Caribbean lower-order and formulated his strategies accordingly.

England themselves have had a reasonable practice match against New Zealand wherein they chased 170 with considerable ease. Skipper Eoin Morgan will be expecting his top-order batsmen to establish a solid platform while the spinners give him control in the middle-overs.

Team News

England

The team management is likely to continue their dependence on all-rounders to bolster the batting lineup without compromising on the lack of options on the bowling front. Liam Plunkett and David Willey could form a potent new-ball duo with Chris Jordan shouldering the end overs burden.

Jason Roy’s statistics might appear to be ordinary. But, his unbridled exuberance could be vital to England’s fortunes even as Joe Root is set to anchor the batting lineup with the likes of Morgan, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes playing around him.

West Indies

Chris Gayle’s penchant for explosive starts at the top of the order should worry most bowling units. However, the middle-order is a little vulnerable which could exert additional pressure on the boisterous finishers.

Sunil Narine’s withdrawal is a massive loss on the bowling front. However, Samuel Badree gets an opportunity to stamp his authority while Jerome Taylor is tasked with leading the pace attack.
