Australia will square off against Pakistan in a do-or-die encounter tonight at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Mohali. Both teams will look for a win to stay alive in the tournament. Whenever these two teams have met in the past in this format, they have given the spectators some memorable matches.

The most memorable of them is definitely the T20 World Cup semifinal in 2010 when Australia’s Michael Hussey won the match for Australia in dramatic fashion.

The pitch at the PCA stadium has been predominantly batting-friendly with stroke makers making plenty out of it. In the last match, New Zealand scored 180 batting first. Pakistan started well with opener Sharjeel Khan hitting the kiwi bowlers all around the park. However Pakistan lost the plot when Sharjeel got out and New Zealand spinners Santner and Sodhi started operating in tandem. It was seen that slow bowlers were hard to put away on this track while the pacers can be easily hit through the line. There was not much swing on offer even in a day-night game. So Pakistan and Australia will both look to use their slow bowlers on this track. So both teams will look to bat first if they win the toss. Australia holds an advantage here as their leggie Adam Zampa is bowling quite well and he can trouble the Pakistan batsmen with his guile.

Pakistan after starting the tournament in a grand manner by beating Bangladesh lost the plot afterwards. After a defeat to India, they were beaten by New Zealand at this very ground. Pakistan, however, will look at the positives they had garnered in that particular match.

Their opener Sharjeel Khan was in good touch and they will look to him once again to provide them a solid start. The key will be their batting order. If Mohammad Hafeez plays then he should be promoted up the order. On the other hand, Australia so far has a mixed tournament with a win and a loss. They will look to be at their best to beat a struggling Pakistan. They have enough firepower to do so.

So it’s clearly Australia who are the favourites, but one can never count Pakistan out given their inconsistent nature.
