Virat Kohli’s second bilateral assignment as ODI captain will be against West Indies

India’s first assignment after the Champions Trophy in England and Wales will be a five-match ODI series followed a solitary T20I against West Indies which starts in June. BCCI confirmed the schedule for the series that will take place over June and July.

The five-match ODI series will begin on June 23 at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain. The second ODI will also take place at the same venue while the third and fourth match will take place at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. The final ODI along with the sole T20I will take place in Jamaica at the Sabina Park.

The series will begin less than one week after the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. The final of the Champions Trophy will take place on June 18 and if India makes it they will only have a break of four days before the first ODI against West Indies begins on June 23.

India’s Champions Trophy campaign begins in earnest after the conclusion of IPL 2017 on May 21. India will play two warm-up matches, against New Zealand and Bangladesh, both of which will be telecast live ahead of the defence of the crown they won in 2013.

West Indies will have a month to prepare for the limited-overs series after the conclusion of their series against Pakistan as they failed to qualify for the Champions Trophy. Their full tour of Pakistan included a four-match T20I series, three ODIs and three Tests, all of which they lost.

The reigning World T20 champions lost the T20I series 3-1. The hosts lost the ODI series 2-1 despite winning the first ODI and the Test series that saw the end of Younis Khan and Misbah Ul Haq’s careers was also won 2-1 by Pakistan.

The five-match ODI series is the ideal opportunity for West Indies to improve on their ninth-place in the ODI rankings. They are currently nine points behind Pakistan who are in eighth place and have to make it into the top eight before September 30, which is the cut-off date to seal qualification for the 2019 World Cup.
