India could become No.1 ranked in ODIs after Sri Lanka series

Fresh from a 1-0 Test series win against Sri Lanka in the three-match series, the Indian team now moves on to the limited-overs leg of the tour, with the three one-day internationals lined up from December 10.

Currently placed second in the ICC ODI rankings, just a point behind South Africa, India have 120 points in their kitty.

If India wins the first game of the series, set to be held at Dharamsala on December 10, they will reach 121 points and just edge past South Africa on decimal points .

However, they will win the subsequent two games of the series (at Mohali and Visakhapatnam on 13 and 17 December), if they intend to maintain the lead.

Sri Lanka are eighth on the table with 83 points.

India will go down to 119 points, even if they manage to win the series 2-1 win.

For the Sri Lankans, the series doesn't put much at stake, as they will continue to remain on 83 points even they end up with a 3-0 loss.

However, if they manage to win the series 3-0, they can go up to 87 points. However, they still won't be able to go past Bangladesh in the table, who have 92 points to their credit.

The Indian team had effected a white-wash on the Lankans in all three formats during their tour to the island nation in July-August this year.

In Virat Kohli's absence, who decided to take a break before the all-important South Africa tour, the team will be led by Rohit Sharma, who will become the 24th captain of the Indian ODI team.

A T20I series, also featuring three games, follows the ODIs, before the team embarks to South Africa for a gruelling tour at the end of this month. Kohli won't be part of the T20Is as well.
