A rain-hit opening day of the first Test at Kolkata between India and Sri Lanka saw just 11.5 overs bowled. But that was still enough for plenty of records to be created and for the hosts to be left reeling at 17/3 after Suranga Lakmal's incredible spell of 6-6-0-3.

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal opted to field on a green track at the Eden Gardens. His decision was immediately vindicated as Sri Lanka's pacers made merry on a track tailor-made for pace bowling. India got off to the worst possible start as KL Rahul was dismissed for a diamond duck (dismissed off the first ball of the innings).

Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli followed not too long afterwards as India's batsmen struggled with the ball moving everywhere. And while there were several times when the play was stopped, the day eventually ended with India on 17/3 after bad light stopped play.

Here are some interesting numbers from day one of the first Test:

0 - KL Rahul was dismissed for a golden duck, which ended his streak of seven successive fifties in Tests. That is a world record for most consecutive fifties in Tests, a record he now jointly-holds along with Everton Weekes, Andy Flower, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Kumar Sangakkara and Chris Rogers.

2 - For just the second time in Test history, Sri Lanka have taken a wicket on the first ball of a Test. Suranga Lakmal dismissed Chris Gayle at Pallekele in 2010 and KL Rahul at Eden Gardens in 2017.

5 - No Indian captain has recorded more ducks in a calendar year than Virat Kohli. This was his fifth duck of the year, going level with Kapil Dev, who was also dismissed for duck five times in 1983.

6 - KL Rahul became only the sixth Indian batsman to be dismissed off the first ball of a Test match. Sunil Gavaskar (thrice), Sudhir Naik, WV Raman, SS Das and Wasim Jaffer were the others.

7 - KL Rahul became just the seventh batsman to be dismissed on the first ball of a Test series. H Sutcliffe, S Worthington, Jimmy Cook, Hannan Sarkar, Wasim Jaffer and Tim McIntosh were the others.

13.83 - Virat Kohli's average at Eden Gardens is just 13.83, his lowest at any venue where he's played more than one Test.

27 - Suranga Lakmal's previous-best streak of consecutive dot balls was 27 against South Africa at Galle in 2014. In this innings, he has bowled six consecutive maidens, picking up three wickets as well.

1983 - Before this, the last time Indian openers got out for single digit scores in the same innings of successive Eden Gardens Tests was in 1983.

1987 - The last team to win a toss at Eden Gardens and elect to field was Pakistan. The match ended in a drawn.

2001 - Before Dinesh Chandimal, the last time a visiting captain opted to field first in a Test in India was Steve Waugh at Mumbai in 2001.

2007 - The last Indian batsman to be dismissed off the first ball of a Test before KL Rahul was Wasim Jaffer. against Bangladesh at Chittagong in 2007.
