India Vs Sri Lanka: Player ratings from the second ODI

Rohit Sha
Rohit Sharma scored his 3rd ODI double century

Fresh off a disastrous match in Dharamsala, Indians were looking to get revenge after a drubbing by Sri Lanka. The Rohit Sharma-led team was put into bat and they responded in a rather destructive way.

Sharma scored his third double century in ODI cricket as India notched up a massive 392 in the first innings.

India looked threatening and dangerous from the beginning of the match and scored runs on every opportunity given to them by the Lankan bowlers. The Sri Lankan team would want to rectify their mistakes and try to overcome the weaknesses shown in the second ODI.

Let us have a look at how each player fared in the second ODI.

India

Rohit Sharma – 10/10

Sharma batted fabulously the entire match. He started slowly as Dhawan was scoring at the other end to build a solid foundation for the team. However, after his century, he accelerated and got the other 100 runs in just over 30 balls.

He changed gears rapidly and began scoring at a much higher strike rate that helped him score his third double century. This approach was backed by the skill and ability that the Hitman possesses. He also planned the entire field well as he restricted Sri Lanka to 251.

Shikhar Dhawan – 8/10

‘Gabbar’ formed a good 100 run partnership along with Rohit to give the team a start they required. The Indian opener scored fluently and looked to be in good touch. His performances for the team prove that he is the best player in the opening spot. He would have hoped to convert his brilliant start into a century, but nevertheless, he gave a platform for the Indian team to notch a big score.

Shreyas Iyer – 8.5/10

The 23-year-old didn’t have the best start to his international career, however, he came back and scored a magnificent 88 off 70 deliveries. He proved the selectors right as he showcased the skills and abilities that he possesses with the bat. Iyer had an amazing 200 run partnership with Rohit as both the players started to accelerate to give India a massive score.

He missed out on his maiden international century as he got out for 88.

MS Dhoni - 7/10

Dhoni didn't have much to offer with the bat as he came in the 46th over to hit a six, and soon after that he ended up losing his wicket to a legcutter bowled by Perera. It was a good outing for the former Indian skipper behind the stumps though: he was involved in three wickets which included an excellent catch to remove the dangerous Perera.

Hardik Pandya – 7/10

Similar to Dhoni, Pandya came into bat late in the innings. He hit a glorious four and got out in the last over. The all-rounder bowled well as he took the wicket of Upul Tharanga and gave only 39 runs in his 10 overs.

Dinesh Karthik – 5.5/10

Karthik didn’t have an opportunity to bat because of the massive 2nd wicket partnership. However, his fielding was impeccable as he stopped multiple boundaries.

Manish Pandey – NA

Pandey didn’t get a chance to bat and had no role to play in either of the innings. He didn’t influence the game in any manner because of the lack of opportunity.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar - 6/10

Kumar had an average match as he bowled well at the start but didn’t get any wickets to break the opening partnership. However, towards the end, he took the wicket of Pathirana. The swing maestro would like to take early wickets in Visakhapatnam to disrupt the Sri Lankan top order.

Washington Sundar – 5.5/10

The debutant didn’t have the best start to his international career. Despite taking the wicket of Lahiru Thirimanne, the 18-year-old was expensive, as he conceded 65 runs in the 10 overs he bowled. He should try to improve the line and length or add variations to his arsenal.

Jasprit Bumrah – 7/10

The Indian pacer looked threatening and took two wickets, including that of Lankan opener Gunathilaka. He was economical, and bowled the perfect lengths to cause a menace to the Sri Lankan batting lineup.

Yuzvendra Chahal – 8/10

Chahal was the best bowler in the match. Despite conceding 60 runs, he bowled the perfect places and tested the Sri Lankan batsman on multiple occasions. Eventually, the leg-spinner finished with three important wickets: Dickwella, Gunaratne and the Sri Lankan skipper Thisara Perera.

Sri Lanka

Pakistan v Sri Lanka - ODI
Skipper Thisara Perera did not have a good day at the office

Danushka Gunathilaka - 4.5/10

The Sri Lankan opener had an average start and failed to convert it to a decent score. He seemed to be in good touch early on, but tossed his wicket to a ball bowled outside the leg stump. He should have capitalized on the bad ball but instead, he ended up giving his wicket away.

Upul Tharanga - 3.5/10

Tharanga couldn’t continue his form from the last match as he seemed restless and was beaten on a couple of occasions. He lost his wicket to an average ball outside the off stump because of the lack of patience on the part of the opener.

Lahiru Thirimanne – 6/10

Thirimanne seemed to be in control of his innings and was slowly building a partnership with Mathews. However, he attempted to play reverse sweep against Sundar and completely missed the ball that went on to hit the stumps.

On the field, he took two catches, which includes a low, good catch at midwicket to dismiss Dhawan.

Angelo Mathews - 8.5/10

Undoubtedly, Mathews was the best player and the only positive for the Sri Lankan side in this match. He bowled accurately and only conceded 9 runs in his 4 overs including a maiden. With the bat, he was exceptional as he scored a fighting 111 to get his team to a respectable total. The all-rounder had an amazing game and would have hoped for some support from the other Sri Lankan batsmen.

Niroshan Dickwella - 5/10

The Sri Lankan wicketkeeper had a decent start and looked to be in a good touch. Dickwella was aggressive and tried to build a partnership along with Mathews. However, the attempt to recover failed as he sliced the ball to Sundar at short third man. He had to be aggressive as the team didn’t have a choice because of the increasing run rate.

Asela Gunaratne - 5.5/10

Similar to the rest of the team, Gunaratne had a good start but failed to convert it to a big score. Moreover, he was needed by the team to build a good partnership with Angelo Mathews. Conversely, he should have been patient and showed good temperament to support Mathews in giving his team a fighting chance.

With the ball, Gunaratne gave 10 runs in the one over he bowled.

Thisara Perera – 4.5/10

Perera had one of the most dreadful matches as a captain. His decision to bowl first overturned as the Indian batting lineup completely destroyed the Sri Lankan bowling and none of his judgments were working in his favor.

As a bowler, despite taking 3 wickets towards the end, he conceded 80 runs in the 8 overs he bowled. With the bat, he couldn’t grab his opportunity as Chahal cramped him for room and it caught the edge, allowing Dhoni to take a spectacular catch. It clearly wasn’t the best match for the Sri Lankan skipper and he would like to have a better game in Vishakhapatnam.

Sachith Pathirana – 4.5/10

The left-arm spinner didn’t have the best of games with the ball. He conceded 63 runs in the 9 overs bowled and took the wicket of Dhawan. Pathirana came in to bat in the 31st over and he lost his wicket to Bhuvneshwar Kumar for only two runs.

Akila Dananjaya – 5/10

In a high scoring game that was a nightmare for the bowlers, Dananjaya along with Mathews was reasonably economical. He gave away 51 runs in 10 overs which is a decent economy for a high score of 392.

Suranga Lakmal - 3/10

The man of the match from the previous game was one of the poorest performers in Chandigarh. He conceded 71 runs in 8 overs and was also hit for 4 sixes in a single over. He had a horrific match as he didn’t get the line and length accurately and was punished for all the bad deliveries bowled. He would prefer replicating his performances from the first match to help Sri Lanka win the series.

Nuwan Pradeep Fernando - 2/10

Fernando was destroyed by all the batsmen of the Indian team and hit around the park. He conceded 106 runs in 10 overs at an economy of 10.6. He wasn’t able to get the rhythm and accuracy that he bowled in the first ODI. Thereby, he was the most expensive bowler of the match and would like to resolve his issues with line and length.
