What's the story?

India won a record 4th U19 World Cup title today, defeating Australia in the final. Following the team's success, the BCCI have announced that the Indian U19 team and personnel will be rewarded monetarily for their monumental efforts in New Zealand.

All the players and support staff would receive cash prizes of INR 20 lakh each while coach Rahul Dravid would receive 50 lakh for guiding the team.

In case you did not know

India regained the U19 World Cup by defeating the same opponents they had beaten 6 years ago, Australia. India have now overtaken Australia as the most successful team in U19 World Cup history, with 4 titles overall.

The heart of the matter

Led by Prithvi Shaw, India had an unbeaten run throughout the tournament. In the final, the Aussies batted first and courtesy some brilliant bowling by the Indian bowlers, were limited to 217.

In reply, India comfortably chased down the total with 11.1 overs to spare. Manjot Kalra smashed an unbeaten101 from 102 deliveries and was assisted well in the end by Harvik Desai who scored an unbeaten 47.

Kalra was adjudged the Man of the Match, while Shubman Gill was adjudged the Man of the Tournament. Anukul Roy ended the tournament as the highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets.

India are the only team who have won all their matches in a single edition of the U19 World Cup twice.

What's next?

Having bagged the trophy, the Indian team would be looking to enjoy the moment before they leave for home.

Author's Take

The U19 team has performed exceptionally well and deserve the cash prizes bestowed upon them. It's also good to see that coach Rahul Dravid's cash prize is more than those of the players. Although it won't be a surprise if Dravid calls for the increment of the cash prizes to be awarded to the players.
