He had played just 26 first class games when Virat Kohli and the team management decided to hand Jasprit Bumrah his maiden Test cap at the beginning of this year, in Newlands.

It was a contentious decision at the time; many thought playing Bumrah ahead of Ishant Sharma was a mistake. But as 2018 meandered to its end, it started looking like the best decision that the management took in what has been a year of shoddy team selections.

Bumrah played a defining role in three of the four overseas wins that India had in 2018 - Johannesburg, Trent Bridge and Melbourne. He claimed a five-wicket haul at both Wanderers [5-55] and Nottingham, and put India on the path of a series-defining victory at the MCG with a six-for.

On a pitch where a wicket fell every 25 overs during the first two days, Bumrah claimed career-best figures of 6-33 to skittle Australia out for 151 in the first innings. In the process, he became the first Asian bowler to snag a 5-wicket haul in South Africa, England and Australia in the same calendar year.
