M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru hosted the contest between Sri Lanka and defending champions England on Thursday, October 26. The Lankans handed England a massive eight-wicket defeat, which propelled them to fifth position in the World Cup 2023 standings.

After winning the toss, England elected to bat first on a relatively slow and dry wicket. Dilshan Madhushanka started off with a peach to Jonny Bairstow, which struck the pad first and would have gone on to hit the stumps. However, Sri Lanka didn't take the review and missed out on the opportunity.

The opening duo Bairstow and Dawid Malan went on to forge a 45-run opening stand before the latter nicked one to the keeper off Angelo Mathews for 28 runs.

Three overs later, Joe Root was sold down the river for just three runs, thanks to a brilliant throw by comeback man Mathews. Well-set Bairstow also had to follow suit for 30 runs off 31 balls as he lost his wicket to Kasun Rajitha.

Lankan bowlers continued to maintain tight lines and lengths as the Brits kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone bagged single-digit scores and were dismissed by Lahiru Kumara. All-rounder Moeen Ali departed for 15 runs to Mathews as England slumped to 122/6.

In the next over, Rajitha continued his success, sending back Chris Woakes for a duck. Ben Stokes tried his best to rescue the Three Lions but faltered on 43 runs off 73 balls. Eventually, England were bundled out for just 156 runs in 33.2 overs with Kumara bagging three wickets.

In response, Sri Lanka started off on a sedate note, losing opener Kusal Perera for just four runs off David Willey's bowling. A few overs later, skipper Kusal Mendis returned to the pavilion as well after scoring 11 runs.

Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama joined hands and hit boundaries quite frequently to keep their side on top. They stitched a brilliant partnership, taking Sri Lanka to victory with eight wickets remaining.

Nissanka went on to score a 77-run unbeaten knock with seven fours and two sixes. Samarawickrama contributed with 65* runs, including seven fours and a six.
