The third Test between India and New Zealand is poised for an entertaining finish after an action-packed Day 2 on Saturday, with 15 wickets falling across both teams. New Zealand reached 171/9 at stumps in their second innings and secured a lead of 143 runs on a track that is getting difficult to bat.
India commenced with an overnight score of 86/4 in the morning session on Saturday, November 2. Rishabh Pant (60) hit two fours on the first two balls against New Zealand's lead spinner, Ajaz Patel, to begin the day positively for the hosts. The flamboyant wicket-keeper batter continued in the same vein and notched up a 36-ball half-century to help his side reduce the deficit.
Shubman Gill (90) played an ideal foil with a sensible half-century at the other as the duo put on a 96-run partnership. After their departures, Washington Sundar (38*) scored some vital runs in the company of lower-order batters. He helped the hosts secure a slender lead of 28 runs.
Ajaz Patel stole the show for the Kiwis by picking up a five-wicket haul. Interestingly, he scalped 10 wickets in an innings during his previous Test in Mumbai in 2021. Veteran Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin (3/63) and Ravindra Jadeja (4/52) bowled well to reduce New Zealand to 171/9 before the end of the day's play.

"It's quite a surprise to me with what I've seen over the years, it's not a typical Mumbai pitch"- Ravichandran Ashwin after play on Day 2 of 3rd IND vs NZ 2024 Test
After stumps on Day 2, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin gave his opinion about the pitch in the Wankhede Stadium, saying:
"Firstly, the game itself is divided into two halves, the wicket is flatter from one end and from the other end it's different. Batters also knew it, they wanted to take me on, so wanted to try something different. Hopefully not many, we should wrap it up quickly, every run is important and we have to bat well. Expected a lot more bounce and speed, it's quite slow, it's quite a surprise to me with what I've seen over the years, it's not a typical Mumbai pitch."
On his brilliant running catch to dismiss Daryl Mitchell, Ashwin added:
"For all the plaque you've given me over the years, I don't think wouldn't have dropped too many. Wanted to give myself as close to the ball I've got great hands, trusted and got through with it."
