Quinton de Kock has slammed most tons in a single edition of World Cup for South Africa.

South Africa opener Quinton de Kock smashed his third century of the 2023 World Cup on Tuesday, October 24. The left-handed batter took 101 balls to bring up his hundred against Bangladesh at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The 30-year-old has now hit three centuries in five games, including tons against Sri Lanka and Australia in the league-stage matches. He is now the only South African batter with three tons in a single World Cup.

The previous record was held by AB de Villiers, who scored two tons in 2011 (single edition). The latter, however, still holds the record for most tons in World Cups (4) across all editions.

With this, de Kock has joined Mark Waugh (1996), Sourav Ganguly (2003), Matthew Hayden (2007), and David Warner (2019) on the elite list of batters with three tons in a single edition of the marquee ICC tournament.

The Proteas opener can now break Kumar Sangakkara and Rohit Sharma’s records. Sangakkara smashed four tons in the 2015 World Cup while Rohit slammed five centuries in the 2019 edition of the event.

At the time of writing, South Africa were 225/3 after 38.4 overs, with de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen at the crease.

Shoriful Islam provided the first breakthrough by dismissing Reeza Hendricks while Mehidy Hasan Miraz trapped Rassie van der Dussen lbw out. Shakib Al Hasan then sent back Markram to bring the century partnership.

The Proteas are chasing their fourth win in the fifth game while Bangladesh are searching for their second win in the fifth match.
