Team India skipper Rohit Sharma played another scintillating knock in the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo on August 4. The 37-year-old led India's run-chase in style, reaching his half-century off just 29 deliveries.
It was Rohit's second consecutive half-century after a 47-ball 58 in the tied opening encounter at the same venue. However, much like the first ODI, he could not convert it to a three-figure score and was dismissed for 64 off 44 balls.
Yet, his knock that included five boundaries and four maximums provided India a blazing start of 97/1 in their run-chase of 241. During his essay, Rohit also overtook former captain MS Dhoni to become India's fourth all-time leading run-scorer in ODIs.
Rohit is currently on 10,831 runs at an average of 49.23 and a strike rate of 92.29 in 264 ODIs.
Fans on Twitter hailed Rohit for another sparkling batting display in the powerplay with the following reactions:
"Lovely batting from Rohit, cerain switch has been flipped since 2002," one fan wrote.
Fans continued to praise Rohit for his dominant batting display with one writing:
"Rohit is in Sehwag 2008-11 phase...peaking in both tests and ODIs."
"Two back to back half centuries for rohit sharma, man in red hot form," wrote a fan.
"On turning pitches, Rohit is India's best batsman currently," a fan tweeted.
Team India collapse after Rohit Sharma's blistering start
Team India were off to a sensational start against Sri Lanka in the second ODI, thanks to Rohit Sharma's spectacular half-century. After throwing away a similar start of 75/0 in their run-chase of 231 in the opening ODI, the Men in Blue were at it again.
On this occasion, India started even better to reach 97/0 in the 14th over, before losing skipper Rohit. However, his dismissal led to two quick wickets of Shubman Gill and Shivam Dube as India slipped to 116/3 in the 18th over.
Jeffrey Vandersay, coming in for the injured Wanindu Hasaranga, was the wrecker-in-chief as he picked up all three wickets in an outstanding spell of leg-spin bowling.
Yet, his biggest breakthrough came when he trapped Virat Kohli LBW for 14 to reduce India to 123/4 in the 20th over.
With an unassailable 1-0 series lead in the three-match affair on the line for both teams, the game hangs in the balance with Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer at the crease.
