"The whole world has lost" - Team India star pens emotional tribute for Diogo Jota after footballer's tragic death in a car crash

Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav shared a heartfelt tribute to Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident along with his brother, fellow footballer Andre Silva, on Thursday, July 3, in Spain. The 28-year-old had recently married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22, and the couple were raising three children.

Diogo Jota was a key member of the Liverpool squad that lifted the 2024–25 Premier League title and had recently helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League, defeating Spain on penalties in the final on June 8.

As the world mourned the tragic loss, Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav joined in paying tribute to the late footballer. The 30-year-old shared a heartfelt message on X, writing:

“Signed in 2020. Won the number 20, and made it his forever. Today, football has not lost. The whole world has lost. Your smile brought a shining light to the pitch you stepped on. Whether it was Porto, Wolves or Liverpool. Hearts were made yours everywhere. My thoughts and prayers to his entire family. May you rest in peace Diogo.”

Meanwhile, Kuldeep is part of India’s squad for the ongoing five-match Test series against England but hasn’t featured in the playing XI for the first two Tests.

Former Indian cricketer and two-time World Cup-winning all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also joined the global sporting community in paying tribute to late Portugal footballer Diogo Jota. Taking to X, Yuvraj shared a heartfelt post, writing:

“Hard to believe Diogo is gone! He was a baller who brought the game to life every time he touched the pitch! One of the finest ever. Condolences to the family, can't imagine the pain of losing not just Diogo, but his brother in the same accident. Strength to all who knew and loved them.”

Yuvraj is set to return to action as part of the India Champions squad in the upcoming World Championship of Legends, starting July 18.
