Ireland batter Lorcan Tucker unfortunately got run out at a crucial moment in the chase during the 2024 T20 World Cup match against Canada on Friday (June 7). The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York hosted the clash.

Canada batted first in the contest after losing the toss. On a tricky surface, they managed to score a respectable total of 137/7 in 20 overs, courtesy of decent knocks from Nicholas Kirton (49) and Shreyas Movva (37).

Ireland then progressed watchfully in the chase with a steady start from the top order. Andrew Balbirnie (17), Paul Stirling (9), and Harry Tector (7) departed without converting their starts. Ireland's chances rested on Tucker's shoulders after that. However, he could only contribute 10, before getting run out at the end of the 10th over, leaving his side in huge trouble at 50/4.

Canada beat Ireland by 12 runs to register their first win in 2024 T20 World Cup

Ireland lost two more wickets after Tucker's departure and got reduced to 59/6 in 12.3 overs. Just as things seemed dire for them, George Dockrell (30*) and Mark Adair (34) fought back with a partnership of 62 runs for the seventh wicket to keep them alive in the contest.

However, the target proved to be out of reach in the end due to Canada's decent bowling performance. Canada captain Saad Bin Zafar reflected on the win after the match, saying:

"It was a very proud moment for me and for us. Ireland did very well but all credit to our boys. We knew that it was a good total to defend and I am extremely proud of my bowlers who delivered when we needed them the most. The wicket got a little slow today so it worked to our advantage."

He continued:

"We did gamble a tad in the beginning but going in with two spinners helped us. It's one game at a time for us. We will come strong against Pakistan; we are here to play positive cricket. It's very important to have our supporters at the ground; hopefully, this helps the younger generation pick up the sport."
