Amazing scenes were witnessed in the London Spirit dugout as all-rounder Deepti Sharma hit the six that ensured her side won the 2024 Hundred Women’s competition. A video of her teammates watching the ball sail over the ropes and then breaking out in joyous celebrations has been shared on social media by the tournament’s official X handle.

London Spirit beat Welsh Fire by four wickets in the Hundred Women’s final at the Lord's in London on Sunday, August 18 to lift their maiden title. Bowling first after winning the toss, London Spirit held Welsh Fire to 115-8 despite Jess Jonassen’s 54 off 41 as Eva Gray and Sarah Glenn claimed two wickets each.

In a thrilling chase, London Spirit got home with two balls to spare as Deepti swung Hayley Matthews for a six over long-on. Shabnim Ismail flung herself backward to take a spectacular catch, but the ball was hit powerfully enough to clear the ropes.

The official X handle of The Hundred has shared a video of scenes from the London Spirit dugout as Deepti smashed the winning hit. Emotions ranging from nervousness to amazement were captured in the clip as the players waited for the ball to land. Once it was confirmed that the ball had gone for a six, the mood changed to one of ecstasy as the celebrations began in the London Spirit camp.

Earlier, experienced pacer Ismail gave Welsh Fire hope as they set out to defend 115. The right-arm pacer knocked over Meg Lanning (4), Heather Knight (24), and Danielle Gibson (22). Gibson’s 22, however, came off only nine balls, while Georgia Redmayne guided the chase with 34 before being stumped off Freya Davies. Deepti put the finishing touches on the innings, remaining unbeaten on a run-a-ball 16.

“She held her nerves and did it for us” - Heather Knight hails Deepti Sharma

Speaking after the close win, London Spirit skipper Knight admitted that the chase was tense. She, however, hailed Deepti for holding her nerves under pressure and bringing her vast experience into play. Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Knight said (as quoted by Cricbuzz):

“Not the best watch to be honest, it was nervy chasing but Deepti is an experienced player, she held her nerves and did it for us. Our international players were great. Everyone has played their roles well. I think we recruited really well, picking Meg and Georgia. Absolutely stoked with Deepti, she has been brilliant with both bat and ball.”

Before her cameo with the bat, Deepti chipped in with the ball in the Women’s Hundred final. She registered figures of 1-23 from her 20 balls, claiming the wicket of Georgia Elwiss (2) courtesy of a sharp return catch.
