Rohit Sharma misses another record as Indian captain

Rohit Sharma, as a batsman might have had an average beginning to his international career, but has gone from strength to strength since 2013. He currently occupies the No. 2 spot in the ICC ODI rankings for batsmen, only behind the ever consistent Virat Kohli. But Rohit Sharma, as an Indian captain, has had a phenomenal start. He won the Nidahas trophy held in Sri Lanka, thanks to Dinesh Karthik's scintillating innings in the finals against Bangladesh. He sealed the match with a last ball six.

Rohit also won the Asia Cup in 2018 when he captained the team. But the reality is that the Mumbai-based cricketer gets only limited opportunities to lead the nation, whenever Kohli opts for rest. But has done really well in the limited opportunities and clearly has leadership qualities. It is clearly evident, as he is the first captain to win three IPL trophies.

Virat Kohli opted for rest in final two ODIs and T20I series against New Zealand, and hence Rohit was once again appointed as India's stand-in captain. However, India lost the fourth ODI in horrific fashion, which put an end Rohit's winning streak as an international captain. He equalled the record with Kohli, as both of them won 12 consecutive international matches for India as captain.

Rohit Sharma still had an opportunity to set a new Indian record in the first game of the T20I series against New Zealand. Prior to the game, he had won seven consecutive T20Is for India, one win away from breaking Dhoni's record of seven consecutive T20I matches as captain in 2016. But the Kiwis put an end to Rohit's winning streak with a brilliant batting performance and then followed it up with the ball as well.

Rohit Sharma missed out on two Indian captaincy records in a span of three matches. However, he would like to come back with a bang in the next game and keep the series alive. As a batsman too, Rohit hasn't impressed against New Zealand and will walk out at Eden Park in the next game, hoping to get the team off to a flyer.
