India won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup held in South Africa in 2007, and deservedly so, but since then the results for Team India in T20 World Cups have been nothing short of dismal. Here I explore some of the reasons as to why this may be the case. The prime culprit for this is the Indian Premier league (IPL) which has been an annual occurrence since 2008 (after the first edition of T20 World Cup), so here are some of the reasons:
No time outs – All the Indian players are used to playing with time-outs, and with the international events not allowing that luxury, it is safe to say that the Indian players are finding it hard to cope up with the fastest form of the game. One needs the rest and the time to strategise.
No foreign players – Indian players are used to finding inspiration from the foreign players who they have been playing with in the IPL. Without them the team looks very poor and a shadow of the team that it is with them. Time to allow some Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Indian team maybe?
No answerability – The owners sitting in the dugouts put pressure on the players, which is probably more than what a nation of more than a billion people brings. Maybe we should have N Srinivasan sitting in the dugout to cheer the Indian team on.
Not enough money – The money that the BCCI has been offering is not good enough, as the IPL has more of it. International cricket is too much hard work, and it’s just cricket. To be successful, Indian cricketers need to be given more money. Get negotiating.
