India vs England 2016 5th Test Day 2 Stats: Ravichandran Ashwin continues his duel with Ben Stokes

Ashwin yet again took the wicket of Ben Stokes

The England tail gave India a taste of its own medicine, wagging enough to take England close to 500 in their first innings total. Ravichandran Ashwin could take just one wicket in the innings, but accounted for Ben Stokes to take his 28th wicket in this series. Liam Dawson made a promising debut, scoring an unbeaten 66 on debut, making a 108-run stand with Adil Rashid to irritate the Indian bowlers throughout the day. Here are the statistics from the second day’s play:

1 - Liam Dawson surpassed David Bairstow, father of Jonny Bairstow, to achieve the highest score by a No.8 English batsman on debut. The senior Bairstow had made the record way back in 1979, against the same opposition, scoring 59.

2 - Adil Rashid and Liam Dawson’s stand was the second best eight-wicket stand at the Chepauk, just marginally behind Imran Khan and Wasim Akram’s 112-run effort in February 1987. Dawson-Rashid fell four runs short of the Pakistani duo’s figure.

3- Stokes became the third batsman to have been dismissed five times by Ravichandran Ashwin in a single series. The others are the late Phil Hughes in 2012-13 and Stiaan Van Zyl in 2015-16.

3- Moeen Ali became the third all-rounder to complete the double of 1000 runs and 30 wickets in a single calendar year. The others to have achieved this feat are Ian Botham in 1982 and Jacques Kallis in 2001.

4 - England’s 477 is the fourth highest total in an India-England Test at the Chepauk. The highest score is 652-7, that England compiled in 1985.

5 - The number of times Ashwin has dismissed Ben Stokes in this series. Ashwin tops the list of international bowlers to have dismissed Stokes the most number of times. Mitchell Johnson, who dismissed Stokes four times in nine Tests, is second.

6 - Ashwin is the sixth Indian in the list of most wickets in India-England Tests. He needs five more wickets to complete 50 Test wickets in India-England contests. He equalled Harbhajan Singh’s tally of 45 wickets after taking Ben Stokes’ wicket.

8 - The Dawson-Rashid partnership was the eighth 100-run partnership for the eighth wicket in India-England Tests.

13 - With thirteen dismissals in the series, Jonny Bairstow went past Matt Prior (2014 series) in the list of most dismissals in one India-England series. The list is headed by MS Dhoni and Matt Prior (2011 series).
