Shreyas Iyer is a young and talented cricketer, possessing the ability to accumulate huge runs with classical shots or even attacking gameplay when needed. He has been in great form recently, scoring two centuries and two half-centuries in the last four domestic and practice matches he has batted in.

Iyer can also prove to be a handy bowler if he manages some time for his bowling. His leg-break bowling can be useful to introduce variety in the Indian bowling unit if the coaches feel it necessary.

As a batsman, he has been impressive so far. His performances in the IPL have been good as well. Moreover, he has already scored two important half-centuries for India in ODIs in just 5 innings, batting in the middle-order.

As Iyer is just 23 years of age, there's no doubt regarding his longevity in international cricket. India should invest on him more than the other aged players for sure, to achieve better long-term results.

Since Rishabh Pant is looked forward to as the successor of Dhoni, I haven't included him in the discussion. After Dhoni bids farewell to international cricket, he is sure to be included in the starting XI of India in ODIs.
