Fifth Test - Australia v England: Day Three
Cook scored a gigantic total of 766 runs in the five-match series as England retained the Ashes

The Ashes are always an intriguing affair. A rivalry older than 100 years, England and Australia battle each for the prestigious Urn.

Over the last decade, the home side has prevailed most often with 2010-11 Ashes being an exception. England traveled to Australia as the favourites and they justified their tag completely.

England won the series by 3-1 and to complete a historic triumph down under. One man who stood above the rest in terms of runs scored was England’s star opener- Alastair Cook. Cook scored a gigantic total of 766 runs in the five-match series as England retained the Ashes.

Of Cook’s numerous great innings over the course of the series, the one which was admired the most was his knock of 189 at SCG. Batting first, Australia put on a total of 280 before putting England to bat.

Out came Cook and company to completely thrash Australia and claim the series. England lead 2-1 going into the match and a win would have drawn the series but Cook’s brilliant strike of 189 stole the show as England posted a stupendous total of 644.

Australia lost the match by an inning and 83 runs and Alastair Cook was deservingly named the player of the match.
