In a 2014 Georgie Pie Super Smash match against Otago Volts, on November 28, the Central Stags batsman Kruger van Wyk’s desperate attempts to avoid a possible run out while at the non-striker’s end turned out to be hilarious.
Opening batsman George Worker swatted a Ryan ten Doeschate bouncer straight back at the bowler; Wyk, apprehensive about the chances of the ball getting deflected back onto the stumps, attempted a dive that went haywire. While the 34-year-old managed to make it to the crease somehow, he should consider himself fortunate that Ten Doeschate wasn’t aware of what was happening behind his back (watch the video below)
Batting first in a 17-over match, Volts could only manage 120/8 in 17 overs. The Stags, despite losing three early wickets, managed to chase the target down in 16.4 overs, thanks to Worker’s unbeaten 53-ball 71.
The league stage of the tournament came to a closure on November 30. Northern Districts have topped the points table, with 7 wins and 2 losses in 10 matches (1 no result). The two preliminary finals are scheduled for December 5 and 6, with the grand finale on December 7 at Hamilton.
